Kevin was introduced to protozoan parasitology by Frank Cox and Tom Cavalier-Smith as an undergraduate at the Biophysics Unit in Drury Lane. He undertook his Masters Degree with Alan Fairlamb and Jorge Tovar at LSHTM; his PhD with Keith Gull and Keith Matthews at the University of Manchester and his postdoctoral work with David Engman at Northwestern University. He runs a cosmopolitan, multidisciplinary group taking a genomics led approach to tackling problems associated with a variety of parasite and vector borne diseases (Cryptosporidiosis, Giardiasis, Trichomonosis, Chagas Disease and Leishmaniasis) and collaborating in a variety of networks worldwide from Europe, to South America, to Africa and the Middle East. His interest is focused at achieving an understanding of parasite virulence, how and why new virulent lineages emerge and how they can be diagnosed and managed most effectively. He has been the proud recipient of the SBPz (Sociedade Brasileira de Protozoologia) Isaac Roitman Prize for Foreign Guest Drinker Speaker.

Kevin has been a proponent and pioneer of Open Access publication and is a modernizer of effective communication and publication for research in communicable disease. He organized “The Internet Conference on Salivarian Trypanosomes and Trypanosomatids” (2000); and Kinetoplastid Internet Symposium (2002). Guest Editing those articles for the first ever open access special issue of the International Journal for Parasitology. He was Founder Editor of Kinetoplastid Biology and Disease, and subsequently founder and Editor of Parasites and Vectors and its popular Bugbitten community blog. He is currently Editor-in-Chief of Virulence.
