Pilgrimage to William Leishman's former home in Blairmore on Loch Long, April 10th.
On April 10th, just after the BSP Spring meeting in collaboration with Elsevier in Glasgow, a special day trip is planned to visit Sir William Leishman’s former home, in the village of Blairmore overlooking the beautiful Loch Long.
William Leishman was the Scottish doctor among the first who described the parasites, later named after him, when he noted them in the spleen of a soldier who had died from Dum Dum fever back in 1901.Although the house is now someone else’s home and sadly not a museum or other memorial kept in the great man’s honour, we will set up camp in the Village hall and have talks on Leishman’s contributions to medical science and some local history around the village and Loch Long.
Anyone interested in joining the visit should either contact Mike Barrett (michael.barrett@glasgow.ac.uk) or sign up during the first day of meeting, so we can get numbers on who will need the bus or else a bike and catering. Although a couple of spare bikes can be available, cyclists should aim to bring their own bike or investigate bike hire in Dunoon (https://www.startlinemtb.com/dunoon-bike-hire/) or Inverclyde (near Gourock) https://www.freedominverclyde.com/.

2026 Cellular and Molecular Fungal Biology GRC and GRS, June 21 - 26, 2026. Holderness, NH, USA
The Cellular and Molecular Fungal Biology GRC is a premier, international scientific conference focused on advancing the frontiers of science through the presentation of cutting-edge and unpublished research, prioritizing time for discussion after each talk and fostering informal interactions among scientists of all career stages. The conference program includes an array of speakers and discussion leaders from institutions and organizations worldwide, concentrating on the latest developments in the field. The conference is five days long and held in a remote location to increase the sense of camaraderie and create scientific communities, with lasting collaborations and friendships. In addition to premier talks, the conference has designated time for poster sessions from individuals of all career stages, and afternoon free time and communal meals allow for informal networking opportunities with leaders in the field.
Celebrating 50 years of the GRC Cellular and Molecular Fungal Biology series, the 2026 conference will focus upon fungal evolution, across multiple scales, as means to dissect the remarkable complexity of fungal phenotypic and genomic diversity. Convening experts from all career stages and multiple sub-disciplines, this conference will explore drivers of fungal evolution including the influences of environments, resources, microbial communities and competition, as well as the cutting-edge technologies and approaches employed to study them. The topic of fungal evolution will be addressed from multiple perspectives: metabolic, cellular, intra-organismal, functional genomics, environments and ecosystems. Discussions will seek to identify major unanswered questions in the field and how the rapid acceleration of digital technologies is likely to shape new ways of tackling them, looking forward to the next 50 years of cellular and molecular fungal biology.
Chairs: Bridget M. Barker and Elaine M. Bignell.
Applications for this meeting must be submitted by May 24, 2026.
